Starting Anew

i let go of the past
that once held me under water.

i had wrapped my loving arms around
the carnage hoping it would change.

light at my back warmed my skin,
penetrated my heart
until rain fell from my eyes.

even in my lamenting i sensed the chiseling,
beckoning me to taste freedom.

knuckles loosened with every breath.
arms and legs soon followed.

i longed for a souvenier…
just in case.

the light was patient.
it illuminated every angle
and soothed my reserve.

i float to the surface forgiving myself…
ready to start anew.
