Family Tree Legacy

i pick up leaves
shed by a branch
stronger than oppression

they reach out
from millions of rings
that sprung from
miles of gnarled roots
earthen worms pray to

secrets etched into the bark
beg me to decipher
what will birth black butterflies
and flood my memories with light

the scent of petrichor stirs my soul
it distracts me from my legacy
i stumble onto a winding path
with signs to turn back

i
play
experiment
forget
remember
refuse
recover
release

rebirth sets me free
to steep the leaves and
pray over the steam
that colors my dreams

knots of karma loosen
as i open my heart
and fly towards the moon
